I Assignment 4 I Freedom

We closed the gallery an hour earlier today so we could do our last assignment for our 2-Dimensional Design class, which is Paint to Music. The objective of this assignment is to forget about everything we have learned over the past year and just let loose. Feel the music, let the rhythm take control of our brush strokes and choose colors that suits the mood of the song. In other words, paint the music!

After we set up our work space, we were told to close our eyes, relax and focus on the music for 1 minute before we start painting.

This is my version of contemporary music. This was a little confusing to me because 1) I'm not used to not thinking and planning before I work and 2) the genre and mood of the songs selected were all over the place. One moment it was sad and the next song was festive and happy. There was no common theme. Either way, I chose bright colors because my favorite song "Riptide" came on and it reminded me of summer, trips to the beach and music festivals.

Classical induce different emotions in different people. Truth be told, it makes me anxious. Maybe it's the orchestra or maybe because it's very dramatic, but it makes me feel rather restless. I chose the hues of browns, black and white to represent the orchestra. Their attire is formal so it's black and white and their musical instruments are brown.

If there is something I learnt during this assignment is that sometimes it is important for us, designers to take a break from "proper" work and just have fun with your art. It's not only relaxing, it also helps with mental blocks.
